The history of the appearance and development of the breed English mastiff
Moloss, at least for today, alreadyIs not actually a breed. Perhaps, indeed Molossians have never been an independent breed. Quite long ago this term was called a special type of dog. "Moloss is ready to tacitly bite," Danutzio said.
However, there were times when real breeds, thenThere are breeds in the modern sense of the term, did not exist at all. Most likely the word "Molossus" was used to describe the type of dogs that are now being combed to the Molossoid type.
These are heavy squat dogs, with shortMuzzle, covered with folds on those areas where the skin, unlike the skeletal model, did not become shorter. "Not the muzzle, but the face," Petro Scanciani says in his story "A Journey around Molossa" in his story. In fact Molossians constantly generate phrases such as: "He ponders", "this is a real sage". We again used the term Molossus in place of Molossoids, because typologically the Molossoids include not a few breeds of dogs. However, not all of them evoke similar feelings.
Pug - also refers to Molsoids. However, looking at him I want to smile, and not reverently to tremble. A boxer is also a Molsozoid of respectable dimensions. This is an excellent dog for protection. However, hardly anyone at the sight of it will actually experience a horror mixed with reverence. Thus, many dogs belong to molsoids. But Molossians, we call only those who, with only one kind of them, cause a mixed feeling of fear and admiration, the desire to have such a dog as a friend and a premonition of what can happen if this dog somehow recognizes an enemy in you.
Mastiff and Bullmastiff, officially designated by the cynologists, as molsoids, are, judging by the impression they make, genuine Molossians, and we want to call them that way. Both these breeds have a common origin. In fact, bullmastiff is derived from the mastiff by crossing it with the former bulldog. This is not difficult to guess even by name.
In the 55th year BC, the legions of CaesarLanded on the British Isles, where they encountered two kinds of dogs. The first were stocky, with a huge, in comparison with the trunk head and short, but very powerful jaws, that quickly felt the eggs carried by private legionaries. It is likely that these dogs were the ancestors of bulldogs, and also partly of modern bullmastiffs. The second species of dogs was huge, real lions, not dogs.
These dogs were direct descendants of Asiro-BabylonianMastiffs, who were brought to England by the Phoenicians 500 years before the invasion of the Romans. Compared with them, Imperial Molosses, which the Romans considered to be the best fighting dogs, looked like elegant house dogs. Having conquered Britain, the Romans departed, taking with them the English dogs that they had called, which they called British fighting and which they began to use in the arenas, forcing them to fight wild animals.
After the fall of the Roman Empire fighting BritishDogs were used in the guards, where they were called "chain dogs". Then in 1200, that is, at the turn of the century, these dogs were used to protect the royal hunting grounds. At this time, the name "chain dog" was replaced by a mastino, and then to a mastiff. So we got to the Middle Ages. In Rome, then, there was a story with Sir Pir Lee, an English nobleman, wounded in the Battle of Agincourt. For many days his mastiff dog caressingly took care of him and cares of her saved his life. The grateful family of Sir Pir grew all descendants of this dog, which thus became the ancestor of the English line of mastiffs. In the era of revival, the mastiff is once again used as a fighting dog.
And the Queen Elizabeth the 1st, whoWas a great lover of this spectacle. It was at this time, wishing to increase the speed of the dog, mastiff crossed with a bulldog. The resulting individuals became the ancestors of the bullmastiff breed. However, it should be recalled that it was not about modern English bulldogs, squat and stocky, but about a medium-sized dog, agile and long-legged. From this time, both species are gradually divided into two distinct breeds. Today, we quite clearly distinguish them.
The best and worst times of the English mastiff
In the second half of the 19th century, mastiffsAre extremely popular. Club "Old English Mastiff" - the first public organization engaged in breeding mastiffov and maintaining the purity of the breed. It was founded in 1883. It is one of the oldest specialized English dog clubs.
By this time, the mastiffs have already received enoughwide use. At the exhibition in 1872, 81 dogs of this breed were represented in London. And then the crisis began. During the world wars, the breed was practically reduced to nothing and was on the verge of extinction. War is always destructive for large dogs, primarily for economic reasons.
When food is not even enough for people, dogsAutomatically become superfluous mouths and the largest mouths disappear first. So after World War II, the only producer left alive was still able to give offspring. The breed was rescued due to the presence of two factors: firstly at the beginning of the war a part of the dogs was sent to America.
Secondly: A London resident, Mrs. Nora Dicken, a passionate lover of dogs of this breed, was determined to prevent her from fading. Mrs. Dicken was the same grip as her favorite mastiffs. She went to the United States and Canada, found sources of funding and bought new dogs. She encouraged all members of the club to actively cooperate and provide financial support, receiving from each of 10 pounds. Her efforts were crowned with success.
She managed to save the breed. Of course, the problems remained. From this time, breed breeding takes place through imbriding, that is, closely related breeding. Such a dilution can lead to certain genetic defects, which is what happened. Genetic deficiencies remain one of the main problems of mastiffs. However, there was no choice. But it is important to emphasize that modern breeders improve the breed year after year and the existing mastiff, of course correctly hatched - is a strong healthy dog that can maintain active vitality and excellent health for 10 years.
